MISSION

  1. To provide, free of charge, the highest quality, state-of-the-art, multi-sensory tutorial reading and written language instruction to children with dyslexia.
  2. To train tutors in the art, science and practice of tutoring children using the Orton-Gillingham approach to multi-sensory teaching of reading, spelling and writing.
  3. Advance the body of scientific knowledge of dyslexia through support of clinical research, to improve today’s standards and tomorrow’s care.

VISION

Using the knowledge and innovative instruction gathered through data and proven research, we inspire and transform students with learning differences into confident, independent, and successful readers and students. Our vision is to collaborate with stakeholders in the academic community for the well-being and value of our diverse learners. It is imperative that all learners have an opportunity to receive services that will improve their academic potential and enhance their educational experience.

HISTORY

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Philadelphia, since opening in 2007, has offered tutoring services to children and training to educators. We use a proven research-based, multi-sensory approach for learning the basic language skills of reading, writing, and spelling. We are the only providers in the Philadelphia area offering this help, without charge, to area families.

LESSONS

Our Center offers one hour lessons, two days a week for the approximately two years it takes to complete all levels of the program. The Multisensory Structured Language Education instruction used at our center is based on an Orton-Gillingham approach.

As the dyslexia center director, seeing is believing. Having taught and trained students since 1998 to overcome Dyslexia, I feel and know that every child has a chance in achieving their goals within our program. In the last 15 years there have been huge strides in curriculum and training philosophy that has allowed faster and better results. As one of the contributing authors of the “Take Flight” program, I have worked through different solutions for all types and personalities of children with Dyslexia.

I am proud to help children with dyslexia and their families and train teachers in this specialized instructional approach.
